I like new age music. I don't know if it's that I grew up in the '80s when Mannheim Steamroller was really big or all that WPAT muzac got into my brain and rewired something, but to this day every night that Echoes is on, I'm tuned in and I can tell Annbjørg Lien from Benjy Wertheimer and Andreas Vollenweider from that mad Greek genius responsible for the Blade Runner theme, Vangelis. I took piano lessons just to be able to play his music. Actually I don't know why I took piano lessons, I taught myself Chariots of Fire, but that's beside the point.
It's cold outside, so I thought I'd freeze us all a bit more with Antarctica by Vangelis. Oh sure, I've got like a slushy grey mountain of ice outside my door, but you know, it's as close as I'll ever get to a whole 'nother continent.
I'd never seen this video for it before, but if you've got a bit of the dark streak in you put those thoughts of the sled dogs going to have lunch out of your mind, everyone lives. At least until the cameras stopped rolling, then I suspect the penguins beat the bejeebers out of the men for bringing sleds through the area. Birds have been getting a bad rap this week, you know. Fly into two engines and suddenly you've got hundreds of people floating in the Hudson, mighty pissed at you. But I love birds, I'll have none of that bird hate and actually I had a moment of silence for those unlucky bastards. I suppose it wouldn't hurt seagulls to file their courses with the FAA. Hey, I don't like the idea of sled dogs freezing either, but they seems to dig it so if some seagulls want to go commit mass suicide in a televised event, who am I to judge? I like new age music.

Sometimes I feel I've got to uh, uh, run away, I've got to uh, uh, get away.
I have had that song stuck in my head long enough to qualify for a full disability pension, I think.
But having lived through the New Age, I have admit...yeah, I like some of it. That Ah-Hah video was cool. Something by Blancmange. Red Lorry, Yellow Lorry and New Model Army. Well, even the Fixx...kind of. Roxy Music? Ah, probably not New Age, they all blend into my lost and damaged yout.
Got the whole thing going on because in Kokomo, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts are still rocking it on every radio station. OK, so not New Age, but definitely of that strata in the permafrost.
But I'm not grooving on the snow at the moment. It was a long drive from Kokomo back to Detroit, and none of it fun. Bought lottery tickets in two states. I win, and the Wigster will be buying two tickets to Tahiti for Mrs. Wiggy and myself. Warm, ah, warm. Enough of the frozen tundra, bring back the sun.
I don't know why it never occurred to me until I watched this video that sled dogs might be used in Antarctica as well as in Alaska!
I like some New Age music, although (sorry!) not Vangelis. The Windham Hill / Harry Winston stuff is OK.
Thanks for all your lovely comments on my blog lately. Much appreciated!
Wiggy--Oh man, you remember Red Lorry, Yellow Lorry?! SWEET! Yeah, Blancmange, The Fixx & Roxy Music are all in my cassette case (can't believe the tapes still play, but they do). Heh, Joan Jett's on just about every day here too, representing for the '80s.
Hope those lottery tickets did good for you, Mum gets one every week and going by the lack of partying I'm guessing hers continue to be one number off. Oy vey.
Anne--some time in the '90s sled dogs were banned from Antarctica to protect the penguins, so that video and the movie it's from are like artsy history now.
I *love* anything on Windham Hill! Liz Story's another favorite pianist like Winston, but Michael Hedges, OMG...that guy could do magic with a guitar.
